What to Expect
Spend 2 days seeing ancient ruins and absorbing history and culture on a trip to Ephesus and Pamukkale from Istanbul.
Ephesus, once the Roman capital of Asia Minor, was a city with a population of 250,000. Walking along the marble street to the magnificent Library of Celsius, you can easily imagine how was the life here in Roman times. You will also spend time in Pamukkale (Hierapolis), an ancient Greco-Roman city in Phrygia, located on hot springs in southwest Anatolia. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and its hot springs have been used as a spa since the 2nd century BC.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Ephesus & Virgin Mary's House
after pick-up from your hotel the night before, you will board a bus from Istanbul to Ephesus, arriving early the following morning. Being a tour visiting the ruins from the period of St. Paul, and stopping to see such sites as Odeon, the monumental fountains, the Library of Celsus, the Temple of Artemis, and gymnasiums, churches, stadiums, and theaters. After lunch, visit the Basilica of St. John and his tomb, and the House of the Virgin Mary, where she spent last year of her life. Dinner and overnight at 3-star hotel in Kusadasi.
Day 2: Pamukkale (Hierapolis)
After morning pick-up from your hotel in Kuşadasi, drive to Pamukkale/Hierapolis for full-day tour. See the magnificently preserved Necropolis of the ancient Hellenistic World, and sites including the Roman Basilica Baths, the Domitian Gate, Agora, the Byzantine Gate, the Roman Fountains, and the Roman Theatre. You will also learn about the hot springs, their contents, and the healing powers of the waters here. When you tour end, you will be driven to catch an overnight bus that will return you to Istanbul the following morning.
